Pastor Larry and Heather Harpel
Larry Harpel was born in The Dalles, OR, to Pastor Mike and Janet Harpel and lived in various towns in Washington and Oregon as he grew up. Growing up as a pastor's kid was both a blessing and a challenge. Although extremely blessed to grow up in a Christian home, having an inside view of ministry left Larry struggling against the tug towards ministry he felt as a child. After graduation he chose to enlist in the Army and hoped to attend college after his enlistment was up, looking to pursue a career in business or education.
Heather (Brown) Harpel was born in Glendale, CA, to David and Venita Brown. She grew up in Eugene and Springfield, OR after her family moved there when she was two. She was also blessed to grow up in a Christian home, and her first memory is being carried into church by her dad. Heather felt the call to ministry at age 15 while attending Old Fashioned Camp Meeting at Bethel Park in Brooks, OR. The only thing she really wanted to do other than ministry was to be a wife and mother.
Larry and Heather met at Camp Meeting in 1988 and then began dating two years later after meeting again at Bethel Park in Brooks. When Larry enlisted in the Army in September 1990 they continued in a long distance relationship and married in December 1991. Together they have four beautiful daughters named Marcalie, Corrina, Jolissa, and Jesaray.
In 1995 while Larry was serving in the Army he was deployed for a year in South Korea. It was while Larry was in Korea that he finally realized he had a call from God to become a pastor. During that year in South Korea he completed his first year of Berean School of the Bible.
In early 1996 Larry finished his deployment in South Korea and was stationed at Ft. Hood, TX for his final year in the Army. It was during this year that Larry became a licensed minister with the Assemblies of God. He also served as the youth pastor at Five Hills Assembly of God in Coperas Cove, TX, until December 1996.
Larry and Heather first served as youth ministers at Silver Valley Assembly in 1996. After two years of working with the youth, God moved them to Wallace, Idaho. Larry served as the pastor of Wallace Assembly of God from 1998 to 2000. In November of 2000 Larry and Heather left Wallace and moved to Ohio. They both served in various lay ministry positions at Solid Rock Ministries in Toledo, primarily working in the Children's Ministry department. In the summer of 2005 Larry and Heather both felt that God was calling them back to Silver Valley Assembly of God. After prayer and confirmation they returned in October 2005. Larry served as the associate pastor for three years. During that time he and Heather worked with youth and children, Heather led worship, and Larry regularly preached at the Sunday morning and evening services. In October 2008 the senior pastor retired due to health problems and in March 2009 Larry was installed as the senior pastor by the Northwest Ministry Network.
Vision for the Church
More than anything Larry and Heather want Silver Valley A/G to be a place where people can meet God and have a growing relationship with Jesus Christ. Wherever you are, whether curious and seeking or following and serving, Larry and Heather want to help you find purpose and meaning in your life and answers to your questions. They believe that can only happen through following Christ, and that life following Christ is more than just surviving, He wants you to thrive!
